Haridwar
Haridwar is among the holiest places of India. This is very sacred place of Hindu religion and people
take dip in the holy river Ganges for the sanctification of the sins. The place is located in Uttarakhand.
AS per the Hindu mythology, this is the place where the sacred nectar fell from the pitcher that was
carried by the celestial bird. During the Kumbh mela in this part of the world, millions of pilgrims
come to this place. This is an auspicious moment. Har ki pauri is a sacred ghat here. In the Sanskrit
language, the meaning of Hara is Lord Shiva and dwara means gateway. The full meaning is Gateway
of Lord Shiva. Hari is also known as lord Vishnu and Haridwar is also called gateway to Lord Vishnu.
This is the place from where the famous char dham yatra starts. This yatra is among the holiest
pilgrimages of India. This is also called the place of Sati and her father Daksha. There is mention of
Haridwar in the garuda purana, the sacred text of Hinduism.
In the past, this place was also mentioned as Gangadwara. This is the place where the prince
Bhagiratha did penance for his ancestral salvation and finally the river Ganges came down from
heaven. He was the descendent of king Sagar of the suryavanshi dynasty. Being in Haridwar is bliss
in itself and one will find very close to salvation also called moksha. The water of the river Ganges is
ice cold and flow is quite fast.
